About This Course

Accurate French language skills are necessary for success in a bilingual workplace. In this course, students enhance their ability to read, write, understand and speak French by participating in a wide range of communication activities. Based on extensive feedback from instructors, students learn to describe people and situations in social and workplace surroundings, past actions, and projects.

Prerequisites

There are four levels of proficiency in the French as a Second Language Program, and they have more than one section for additional practice. The levels are Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Proficient. Each level complements the other and builds upon previously introduced concepts and vocabulary.

Who Should Attend

Students who need to practice recounting events and experiences in the past tense as well as future projects in simple and complex sentences.

If you are studying for the Federal government’s Level A language exam, or if you need a refresher course to practice for your upcoming language renewal exam, you will benefit from this course.

Sign up for this course if you have attended our former Level 3 course in the past 12 months.

What You’ll Learn

  • Consolidation: past tenses (imparfait, passé composé) and complex sentences (simple relative pronouns qui, que, , dont)
  • Introduction to present conditional
  • Make comparisons: comparatives and superlatives
  • Describe and characterize people : their appearance, personality and character
  • Describe relationships, recount misunderstandings and conflicts
  • Describe and characterize your office space
  • Recount past events, compare the past and present
  • Express obligation and restrictions

Course Materials and Fees

Students are encouraged to purchase a hard copy or non-printable digital copy of Shaum’s Outline of French Grammar, Seventh Edition, which is used in all French as a Second Language courses.

The following text is not used in the course, but it can be used as a supplement for more practice. It is available at the Algonquin College bookstore:

Additional Notes

There are no grades given in this course, and after successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Achievement from Algonquin College Corporate Training.
